Your Cell Phone Apps Finally Become Customizable
When smart phones first became available, among the things that sold them to the general public was the fact that they could readily be made more feature rich by cell phone apps. And what is meant by an app?
Nothing more than application, of course, which is to say software for your phone that makes it more customizable. Apps actually change where cell phones fit in your life, making them so much more than just communication devices. In fact downloading applications to your phone takes it to place never imagined by the phone service operator.
Up until the last few years applications were loaded onto your phone by connecting to a PC and then the internet, or directly from the internet. The phone company held a store of approved apps online. Thee were in turn programmed by phone developers, often third parties.
What changed things drastically is the arrival of Android, Google’s new operating system. This has a nifty little feature that changes the game completely – it allows you to become an app designer. You don’t have to put up with how some developer thinks your application should work – you design it, it works how you want.
So how does ‘App Inventor’, the program Google have put on Android to do this, turn you into an application developer? It works because it reduces programming to some simple steps, using obvious units of the cell phone’s functionality. And as a result cuts out the middle man, and puts you in charge of making apps that you want.
And don’t forget that the phone apps you design have total access to the smart phone’s rich functionality- things like GPS sensors, speech processors, music and video and in built accelerometers and orientation devices. All for you to mix and match in ways previously undreamed of.
Look to Apple, Blackberry and Microsoft’s Win Mo to start playing catch up quick here, because cell phone apps construction could revolutionize the way we use our cell phones.
If you have a favorite or useful cell phone app, you are probably happy to share it with family and friends. Individuals share and trade cell phone applications for best use of the devices.
