My mom and dad didn’t have to decide how old I had to be to get my own cell phone because they were not around then. Parents now have to decide things that they didn’t use to have to decide back in those days. Moms and Dads are reluctant to have their kids grow up so fast and want to limit handheld games, cell phones, and computers.

These are all devices that children absolutely adore. Since your children are getting cell phones at earlier ages than before, you have to decide when it is time for your child to have a cell phone, and when is too early. One thing to consider is your child’s safety and well being; they’ll be able to get a hold of you more easily with a cell phone. However, it’s very likely that your child will use their cell phone for their friends more than for you. Adults can find cell phone models for a dime a dozen in today’s market. Even the cheapest phones are still outfitted with cameras, texting, GPS, web browsing, and so on and so forth. However, kids don’t have as many options for different child’s cell phone models, if you’ve made the decision that they should have one. There are no frills associated with kid’s cell phones; they often just have the bare essentials.

Young kids would love the extra options but in reality they don’t need them and most parents would prefer to have just a basic kids cell phone. You can get some useful safety features with a child’s phone though, such as call filtering of unknown numbers, and programmed keys so they can call important people (like their parents) at a push of a button. All in all, there are fewer choices of kids phones that make picking one out for your child much easier than picking out that nifty model that you might want for your own phone.

When it comes to phone plans for kids phones, the prepaid ones might be the best option. Although prepaid phones and prepaid cell phone plans exist, there are not nearly as many as the regular ones. Cell phone companies don’t really have to put that many prepaid options out there because people are so used to spending a monthly fee. The phone companies would rather have you go with a regular monthly plan over a prepaid one because they make more from you. But if you want a plan for your child, you probably are better off with a prepaid phone especially in the beginning.
