Cellular phone usage, in prison, has been on the rise as well as jail staff firings on charges of corruption. How is this happening? How does the equipment get in? How can we keep safe from this new threat?
Many strategies such as educational programs and technologies are being used to solve this problem. Technologies such as cellular phone detection and blocking are also being deployed. Although these help, the human element also must be taken into account. As wadges and salaries of staff and guards remain the same, how can we create programs to help them reduce the temptation of performing services for inmates for pay?
The solution may lie in improving society and rehabilitation programs. Our goal should be to reduce the need to commit criminal acts and take a pro-active solution to crime prevention. As the prison population grows at an unsustainable rate, these becomes a serious problem. For the very purpose of prisons are at risk and we need to make sure crime and criminal networks can not escape and keep us all safe.
