Problems With Inmate Telephone Service And Criminal Organizations
A new type of intelligent criminal causing serious problems in an already overcrowded prison system has recently come to light. Although organized crime has existed for as long as the history of man and society, a new type of prisoner is emerging, fueled by the growth of the United States prison system and new programs such as the “war against drugs”.
You’ve probably heard stories — the prisoner who gets extra recreational time, makes phone calls, orders pizzas to their cell and gets a few extra “special relaxation visits” each week. A new breed of organized criminal has emerged, using capital and assets to buy privileges and control, even in jail.
A good indicator of the problem is communication technology in prisons and illegal inmate telephone service usage. Cellular phone usage, in prison, has been on the rise as well as jail staff firings on charges of corruption. How is this happening? How does the equipment get in? How can we keep safe from this new threat?
While educational and safe corruption initiatives help to reduce these problems, new technologies such as devices that locate the transition of cellular phone signals, block radio and communication signals and more have emerged and are being deployed across the country. But is education and the usage of technology enough? We all have felt the temptation of money and the salary of prison staff and guards isn’t getting higher any time soon. Does the solution to the problem lie with technology or reducing general corruption? How can we stop the greed and corruption?
What is the solution to this problem? Does it lie in improving prisoner rehabilitation programs? Is the root cause society itself? A strong goal would be to reduce the need to commit such criminal acts. A pro-active stance to crime prevention. The prison population, growing unsustainably has been a serious problem for many years now. Reducing problems inside the jails needs to be solved before the system crumbles from within
