Many disabled people live near poverty in the U.S. Since many disabled people are unable to work, they can only receive SSI.

Living near poverty does not allow much spending room for people. Only the bare bones necessities can be met. One of the things that disable people should have but might not be able to afford is a cell phone. Cell phones can be a lifesaver in times of emergencies.

Fortunately, the government offers free cell phones for the disabled. For disabled people to get free cell phones, their income must be at the poverty level which is set by the government. For example, if you were already a participant in other social programs like public housing assistance they you can get a free cell phone too.

You get a very limited amount of minutes to use each month. Usually it is around 60 minutes. The exact number of minutes varies by state. If for some reason you intend to use more than the allotted time then you would have to purchase prepaid minutes.

Every year you have to re-qualify for the free phones. The cellular provider would need to see documentation showing that you are still in the low income bracket.

Sign up for a free cell phone by going to Safelink. Currently not all 50 states have this program so you need to check to see if your state is on the list at the Safelink website.

Fill out and submit the application for a free phone along with your supporting income documentation. The documentation should include pay stubs, tax returns, letter of employment, and documentation showing that you are receiving other social benefits.

Watch the amount of minutes you use each month. Since the amount of minutes you have to use are limited, you want to save them for true emergencies. You can save up the unused minutes and it will roll over each month.
