Cellular Phone Ethics 101

It’s a bit irksome when you’re in a diner and someone from the next table suddenly bellows out in laughter; or worse; talks animatedly at the top of their lungs as if the person they’re talking to is on top of a mountain! You turn around only to find the person deep in conversation with another on his cellphone.

You begin to see that everyone from the nearby tables are also giving the person annoyed looks and murmuring among themselves just how crass this person is. Sadly, this is not a rare occasion.

Several people have this habit of yammering on their cellular phones as if they’re the only ones in the room and not in a public place. Lest you become one of them, it’s best to have your cellphone ethics checked.

CELLPHONE ETHICS

When in a public place, we don’t go around chatting as if we were broadcasting the daily news that everyone should hear. This goes as well to cellphone conversations. It’s a private conversation that should stay private – just between you and the person on the other line.

If you are in a restaurant, in a crowded place or someplace where people are just a few feet away from you; you should move away from the crowd or excuse yourself from the table to take the call in private.

At the movies, public commutes, libraries and other places where silence is observed; it’s best to divert all calls to your voice mail and have your phone in vibrate mode. Naturally, if you’re on a date, taking phone calls on your cellular is a big no-no! You don’t want your date to think you’d rather talk to someone else when you’re with them.

CELLPHONE PRECAUTIONS

One of the essentials to also remember when talking about phone ethics is that behaving in a way that you are not so focused on your cellphone and your calls could eventually save your life – particularly if you are behind the wheel. There have been several accidents caused by a driver losing focus because they were candidly talking to someone on their phones.

Whether you have your Bluetooth headset on or you are on speaker phone, the fact is that your attention is divided between driving and talking on your cellular. You will not only be endangering yourself, you will likewise be endangering other people on the street.
