The new smart traffic lights work by; placing sensors in the road, just ahead of the traffic light. When a car approaches the traffic light the sensors will detect the exact speed of the car. If the approaching vehicle is speeding, then a message from the sensors will be sent to the control box and the traffic light will turn red. The traffic lights have built in automatic number plate recognition cameras, in order to detect an oncoming emergency vehicle.
